Gail Maier Feline Leukemia (FeLV) Sanctuary at AHHA

A little info about Feline Leukemia (FeLV)

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a retrovirus that weakens a cat's immune system, making them highly susceptible to secondary infections, anemia, and certain cancers. It is a feline-only disease and poses absolutely no risk to humans, dogs, or other non-feline species.

Transmission

  • How it spreads: The virus is primarily shed in saliva, but is also present in nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk. It is often called the "friendly cat disease" because transmission typically requires prolonged, close contact such as mutual grooming, sharing food bowls, and bite wounds from fighting.

  • Mother to kitten: Infected mother cats can pass the virus to their kittens before birth or through nursing.

  • Environmental safety: FeLV is very fragile. It cannot survive long (usually only a couple of hours) in the environment once dried, making it highly unlikely a cat will catch it from contaminated bedding or empty spaces.

Health & Lifespan:

While there is no cure, an FeLV diagnosis is not a death sentence. Thanks to advances in veterinary care, many FeLV-positive cats live happy, comfortable lives for years. Some young cats and kittens are even able to naturally clear the virus from their systems entirely before reaching 6 months of age.

Sanctuary Care:

Because of the risk of transmission to other cats, FeLV-positive cats should be housed in dedicated sanctuaries or single-cat households away from uninfected cats. To ensure the best quality of life, these kitties need:

  • Strictly indoor living: Protects them from exposure to other outside diseases.

  • Low-stress environment: Helps prevent flare-ups and keeps their immune systems strong.

  • High-quality nutrition and vet care: Prompt treatment of any health issues is critical.
